Science Ideas

Astronomy

  • If you want to go beyond planetarium software and virtually fly around the universe, try Celestia, available for Mac, Windows, and Linux. It’s a little more complicated than Stellarium, but even if you limit yourself to the solar system you can watch planetary orbits (turn on Orbits in the Display menu to see their paths) and explore the moons of Jupiter (select Go To Object in the Location menu and type in Jupiter).

  • Stellarium, available for Mac, Windows and Linux, is free planetarium software. With it you can see what the night sky would look like from anywhere on the planet, at any time. You can also superimpose the constellations of eight different cultures on the sky, integrating the study of Egyptian or Native American culture with your science curriculum.

Chemistry

  • Nice software for learning about chemistry, astronomy, and measurement, including periodic table tools.
